TERPENES

Healing Plant Oils

Terpenes are a large class of molecule that are produced by many species of plants. They are the main ingredient in essential oils, and are the fragrant compounds responsible for plants’ distinctive smells.

Terpenes are not just responsible of the aroma, but they also have an important biological and therapeutic benefits. It has been scientifically shown that the essential oils of plants have therapeutic properties and are the pharmacological base of aromatherapy.

Clinical testing has certified Terpenes aid our bodies as they have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibiotic, memory enhancement, sedative, anti-seizure, anti-anxiety, mood enhancing, anti-oxidant, and immunosuppressive benefits.

For instance, alpha-pinene and beta-caryophyllene interfere with molecules that dilate our blood vessels. Less dilation equals less inflammation. Evidence Suggests that whole-plant hemp (that includes terpenes and cannaboids)  is superior to isolated compounds from the plant.

The most abundant terpenes in the Cannabis plant that form most of its essential oil are the monoterpenes myrcene, pinene, limonene, linalool, eucalyptol and caryophyllene. The variation in the ratio between these terpenes is what produces the wide range of aromas that can be found in plant, herbs, fruits and vegetables. It has been recently discovered that they can also take part in the varied pharmacologic effects as well as generate synergy with cannabinoids.

This isn’t entirely surprising: as pinene and myrcene are anti-inflammatory, and CBD is also anti-inflammatory, then the body has a chance to fight inflammation from three different angles.

This combined benefit is known as the Entourage Effect; cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, CBA  produce better outcomes when they are consumed alongside a supporting cast of terpenes.
